Another group of U.S. congressmen need to delay Russia’s entry into WTO
Group of 23 U.S. congressmen of the Democratic and Republican parties on Friday in a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk has expressed concern over the possible introduction in the near future Russia into the World Trade Organization (WTO), according to Reuters.
The congressmen are concerned that Russia, in their opinion, away from the commitments made to her in 2006 to accede to the Agreement on Information Technology in the framework of the WTO accession process.
“The participation of Russia (the Agreement) is crucial to U.S. high-tech products to be competitive and is guaranteed not subject to customs tariffs in the growing Russian market. If you do not, then U.S. companies exporting and doing business in Russia, American firms that use U.S. technology products, will face serious difficulties, “- said in a letter which is reproduced RIA” Novosti “.
American companies interested in Russia to be committed in writing to join the Agreement.
In October, the head of some of the largest technology companies in the U.S. called on U.S. President Barack Obama with a letter urging the administration to acknowledge that “the data in the framework of Russia joining the WTO commitments to reduce tariffs to zero is not as comprehensive as the obligations envisaged by the Agreement on Information Technology “.
Information Technology Agreement was adopted at the First Ministerial Conference of WTO members in Singapore in 1996. It established the principles of international trade in information technology. The agreement provided for a gradual reduction of customs tariffs on information technology products and their elimination from 1 January 2000.
Last week, a similar concern expressed in the U.S. Senate.
Director of the Department of Trade Negotiations Ministry of Economic Development Maxim Medvedkov on Thursday confirmed that on Wednesday an agreement with Russia Georgia on the monitoring of goods at the border of Abkhazia and South Ossetia - the last stumbling block to Russia’s entry into the World Trade Organization.
