Kudrin: Russia will join WTO in the summer
Russia plans this summer to start the procedure of entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO), said today at a press conference, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin. According to him, Moscow hopes to complete by this time all the technical elements of training and move to a direct entry into the organization, reports Reuters.
Speaking in Washington during the spring session of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kudrin reaffirmed Moscow’s policy of liberalizing the economy. He also said that WTO accession will accelerate Russia’s economic growth and inflow of investments.
Earlier, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said that Moscow hopes to join the WTO before the end of this year. The Director-General Pascal Lamy, the organization noted that it’s doable. The U.S. and EU have demonstrated support for the intention of Russia to become a WTO member.
According to WTO rules, each of the 153 members of this unit has the right to block a decision on the accession of new countries into the organization. So the new candidate should hold bilateral talks with the country that imposes a beginner’s veto. For a long time, Moscow could not agree on WTO entry with Georgia.
