Georgia has revealed the conditions of Russia’s accession to the WTO
Georgia’s position in negotiations on Russia’s entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) will remain unchanged: official Tbilisi should be returned to the control over the work of customs checkpoints in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, said today’s press speaker of the Georgian president Manana Manjgaladze.
According to her, the Georgian side will consistently uphold this position and continue, including in the beginning 9 March 2011. Dialogue in Bern (Switzerland). On the eve of the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Georgian Parliament Akaki Minashvili also said that “Georgia will support Russia’s accession to the WTO, if the Kremlin agrees to control Georgia’s customs checkpoints in Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region.”
“The WTO has specific economic demands, chief among them is the fact that trade between countries should be transparent. Accordingly, we demand that Tbilisi has had the opportunity to know what kinds of products and goods are imported into the regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and what - exported from there. Who exactly will carry out surveillance - the question of negotiations “, - emphasized A. Minashvili.
Recall that Georgia and Russia agreed to start negotiations on Russia’s WTO accession. On the eve of the weekly press briefing Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Nikoloz Vashakidze said that the proposal in this regard came from the Russian side. “We have received a proposal from Moscow to begin talks on Russia joining the WTO, and gave a positive response. The talks will begin on March 9 in Berne”, - said N. Vashakidze. However, he refrained from detailing the key issues to be addressed during negotiations.
According to N. Vashakidze, the Georgian delegation at the meeting, headed by Tamara Kovziridze - Advisor to the Prime Minister Nikoloz Gilauri.
It should be noted that Georgia for several years took a negative stance on the accession of Russia to the WTO. She explained disinterest in helping Russia, which Tbilisi considers minded hostility to the foreign policy of Georgia. The Georgian side demands, in particular, de-occupation of Abkhazia and South Ossetia - the Territories, whose independence Russia recognized after the war in August 2008.
